About Kristian

A quiet room for the harder conversations.

Exuvia Counseling is a virtual private practice dedicated to couples therapy, sex therapy, and relationship coaching. The name — exuvia — is the shed skin an organism leaves behind as it grows. The work here often looks like that: careful, honest shedding of the patterns that no longer fit.

Portrait of Kristian

Meet Kristian V. Gallegos, MSW, MEd, LCSW

I believe that healthy relationships are among the most important contributors to a meaningful and fulfilling life. When our relationships are thriving, we tend to feel more resilient, connected, and emotionally grounded. When they are struggling, the impact often extends far beyond the relationship itself, affecting our mental health, physical well-being, work, family life, and overall quality of life. Helping people restore connection, heal from painful experiences, and build stronger relationships has become the focus of my life's work.

For more than 11 years, I have specialized in helping individuals and couples navigate some of life's most complex challenges, including relationship conflict, infidelity, emotional disconnection, sexual concerns, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, and intimacy difficulties. Over the course of my career, I have worked with hundreds of individuals and couples from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and relationship structures, guiding them toward healthier communication, deeper emotional connection, renewed intimacy, and lasting change.

My educational journey reflects my commitment to becoming a highly specialized clinician. I earned my undergraduate degree from San Diego State University, my Master of Social Work from Delaware State University, and pursued advanced graduate study in Human Sexuality at Widener University. I have continued to invest extensively in specialized training in many of the most respected, evidence-based models for relationship and individual therapy, including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Gottman Method, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP/ExRP). My work also integrates principles from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based interventions, and contemporary sex therapy research to tailor treatment to each client's unique needs.

My professional experiences have been as diverse as the people I serve. I have worked in correctional mental health within a women's prison, where I developed a profound appreciation for resilience, trauma-informed care, and the complexity of human behavior. Living and working in rural Alaska reinforced the importance of cultural humility, adaptability, and providing meaningful care in underserved communities. My professional journey has also extended internationally, including clinical work while living in Argentina and supporting clients from a variety of cultural backgrounds. These experiences have strengthened my belief that while every person and relationship is unique, our need for connection, understanding, and belonging is universal.

Clients often tell me they appreciate that I am both compassionate and direct. I believe therapy should be a place where you feel genuinely understood and supported, but also challenged when necessary. My style is warm, collaborative, and deeply client-centered, yet I won't shy away from addressing the patterns that keep people feeling stuck. I take my clients' goals seriously because I understand that therapy is an investment—not only financially, but emotionally. My responsibility is to help ensure that investment translates into meaningful, lasting progress.

I have a particular passion for helping couples recover after infidelity, rebuild trust, improve communication, strengthen emotional and sexual intimacy, and rediscover the relationship they want to create together. I also work extensively with individuals experiencing relationship anxiety, OCD, and concerns related to sexuality, desire, and intimacy. Whether the goal is repairing a relationship, overcoming intrusive thoughts, improving sexual well-being, or developing healthier patterns of connection, my approach is always grounded in scientific evidence while remaining personalized to the individual sitting across from me.

I am proud to provide an affirming, inclusive, and respectful environment for LGBTQIA+ individuals and couples. Every client deserves to feel safe, understood, and valued regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, relationship structure, or cultural background. I believe that effective therapy honors both the uniqueness of each person and the universal human need for acceptance, authenticity, and connection.

In addition to providing psychotherapy, I offer clinical supervision and professional consultation to fellow clinicians who are committed to expanding their knowledge and strengthening their clinical practice. I view supervision as an opportunity not only to develop clinical competence, but also to cultivate thoughtful, ethical, and evidence-based therapists who can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

At the heart of my practice is a simple belief: meaningful change is possible. Whether you're seeking to repair a relationship, heal after betrayal, improve your sexual well-being, manage anxiety or OCD, or simply build a more connected and fulfilling life, therapy can provide the tools, insight, and support to help you move forward with confidence. It would be an honor to be part of that journey.

How I practice

  • Virtual only

All sessions are held over secure video. It removes commutes and lets partners join from wherever they are.

  • Private pay

I don't bill insurance. Your care stays confidential and structured around your goals rather than a diagnostic code.

  • Focused caseload

A small practice by design — enough space to prepare for sessions and think carefully between them.

  • Two lanes of work

Clinical therapy for residents of DE, ME, and AK. Relationship coaching everywhere else.
